Peggy Shirlene Reid entered this world on September 21, 1947, in Anthony, KS, and passed peacefully on September 30, 2024. Born the youngest of 8 children to Orpha and Opal Grayson, she lived East of Hawley on the family farm. After graduating high school in Nash, she attended Oklahoma State University until she wed her true love, Lynden, in the Hawley Baptist Church.
After moving back to Nash, she completed her degree at Northwestern, and they began their lives as a farmer and second grade teacher. Peggy taught second grade at Pond Creek-Hunter for 35 years, where she would return home in the evening to tell of her day with the students. At the end of every year, we always felt we knew several of her students just from the stories!
In 1970 their family grew with the addition of their favorite son, Jason, and in 1976 they added a daughter, Monica.
After 35 years at Pond Creek, Peggy “retired”...and then spent two years teaching second grade at Hillsdale Christian School. After her second stint teaching, she became a full-time farm wife, helping with all the normal farm chores and keeping track of Lynden.
Peggy was always a huge sports fan, cheering on her Oklahoma State Cowboys and St. Louis Cardinals, and when the OKC Thunder arrived, she was in heaven. She was an avid birdwatcher and took many pictures of buntings, finches, and woodpeckers from her back porch. She loved flowers. She always had a passion for reading, which she extended to her children. She was always accompanied in her activities by one of her beloved pets. Spending time in Oklahoma City with Monica was always a special joy, as it gave her a change of pace from the farm. Peggy was a cornerstone of the Nash Christian Church, teaching Sunday School for many years and serving in the choir and CWF
She indulged us…we were spoiled. She supported us in our many activities growing up, from sports to FFA. Over the years, she attended many of her grandkids’ tennis and volleyball matches, football, basketball, and baseball games. Melann was always shocked with the intensity with which she watched the games. Such a sweet, reserved lady just wanted them to hit harder!
In March of 2022, Peggy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A devastating diagnosis, to be sure, but she accepted it with dignity. She left this world a better place for her having been in it, and the way she fought her disease was a true testament to her faith and strength. Our family cannot thank Monica enough for the role she took in Mom’s life at this time…coordinating care, talking to the doctors and explaining treatments, and housing them on their many trips to OKC for treatment.
Peggy is survived by husband Lynden and dog Pete; son Jason and daughter in law Melann and their children Grace and Connor of Enid; and daughter Monica Reid of Oklahoma City. Her siblings surviving are Pat Maphet, Carol Fouts, and Linda Overton.
Memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 04, 2024, at the Nash Christian Church with Pastor Matt Watkins officiating. In lieu of flowers, we ask donations be made to the Nash Christian church CWF or OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center, www.ouhealth.com/philanthropy-at-ou-health. Arrangements by Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek, OK.
